I had a wonderful day today, meeting Pua, Averie, and Charlie. I took the train up from San Diego to Irvine where Pua picked me up from the train station. I met Ellie the puppy, and had a glass of iced tea, saw Bryson's golden ballet shoe. Then we checked out Newport beach. It was crowded so Pua and I retired to Pua and Charlie's favourite bar, The Newport Beach Brewing Company, which makes a nice blonde. Averie met us there, and eventually Charlie. I didn't get to meet Bryson, he was studying, or Caris, who was tied up elsewhere.

Pua waited with me for the train. It was late, and at San Juan Capistrano the train had a ten minute delay while waiting for another to clear the tracks ahead. Better waiting than colliding I guess. I saw a comment to the effect that this train journey was leisurely, so leisurely that you could stop for a coffee the jog along the tracks to catch up to the train. The distance would serve high speed trains for the journey, allowing people to commute a reasonable distance by train. The journey is roughly along the coastline, meaning that there are no gradients to for a train to struggle against, and I didn't notice any sharp corners needing a reduced speed. If there are any such corners then I'm sure they could be straightened out without significant expense. With the powerpoints available in coach class people can easily work during their journey. Check in times would be a lot less than at the airports and people could use the train more often than the number of suit wearers I used to see on the puddle jumper flights I used to take from LA to San Diego.

Brian, it was the highlight of my week and my great honor to meet you. I know we were tired after all of those blonde brews and good food, but I have to admit that I'm happy that the train was a little late. Those few extra minutes sitting with you outside in the cool night under that beautiful full moon and talking was wonderful. I enjoyed learning more about you and I appreciated your easy candor and cheerful personality. I'm very happy to call you my friend and I look forward to the day that Charlie and I are able to get to his "ancestral homeland" and visit you on your homesoil!

Newport Beach . . . my old stomping grounds. My grandparents live nearby, so whenever we wanted to go to the beach, we'd go there.

Hope you had a lovely time.
