Camp Camping, USA Style

I'm with Jon at Santee Lakes recreational preserve, a campground near San Diego. This is not camping as I know it. It is nothing like the school camps I went on, especially the ones where we went upriver and pitched tents. Here it's all Recreational Vehicles (RV), that's trailer homes (caravans) and motor homes, and by homes they do mean having all the amenities of home. It's plugged it and has water and sewerage connections, so hot showers are available, televisions vcr, and dvd players. I've even seen satellite dishes for those people for whom the free-to-air tv isn't enough.

The camp element is nothing exceptional. There's three hundred campsites with a few hundred of people here, and seven sites are here as part of Rainbow RV. There's no screaming queens, all the guys are quite regular. Apart from a few fairy lights, plenty of rainbows, and a few pink flamingoes there is no over-the-top decorations. Nothing as outrageous as those I saw at Vinegar Hill a few years ago.

One of the activities we performed was croquet, where I managed start with beginners luck and finish abysmally bad, losing the last three of the four games played, even after starting some of them well.

Santee Lakes is a water reclamation area, with seven lakes of differing levels. The water quality of of a level where they they allow for full body contact, such as swimming or waterskiing, where accidental ingestion is assumed to occur.

All in all, a very relaxing weekend. I'd do it again.
