Wanderings in Virtu and Verity

Prequel to an excellent series

I have just finished reading The Dawn of Amber by John Betancourt. It’s the start of a prequel trilogy to the Amber chronicles by Roger Zelazny. Roger wrote the two chronicles of Amber books; the first was narrated by Corwin, and the second by his son.

The First Chronicles of Amber

  1. Nine Princes In Amber (1970)
  2. The Guns of Avalon (1972)
  3. Sign of the Unicorn (1975)
  4. The Hand of Oberon (1976)
  5. The Courts of Chaos (1978)

The Second Chronicles of Amber

  1. Trumps of Doom (1985)
  2. Blood of Amber (1986)
  3. Sign of Chaos (1987)
  4. Knight of Shadows (1989)
  5. Prince of Chaos (1991)

The old version of my web log uses the book titles as headings for each section.

Roger also wrote six short stories set in the Amber universe. These are very hard to get hold of. As a fan I wish these would all get collected in a single edition and made available.

  • Prolog to Trumps of Doom (1985)
  • The Salesman’s Tale (1994)
  • Blue Horse, Dancing Mountains (1995)
  • The Shroudling and the Guisel(1994)
  • Coming to a Cord (1995)
  • Hall of Mirrors (1996)

A collection of trumps, as interpreted by fans, is available.

The Dorian Diaries by Jan Pieter de Graaf are very good too. They are set in The Black Unicorn Campaign By Astrid Tops. I used to run an Amber Diceless Roleplaying campaign too. With all the plotting and scheming the players were doing I didn’t have to do much for us all to have fun.

I started out by saying I had finished the first book of the prequel. I am looking forward to reading the second, Chaos and Amber. These prequels are narrated by Oberon, Corwin’s father.
