He thinks we spend too much time on entertainment and sport than in church on Sundays. I think New Zealand has come a long way since the days when it essentially closed on Friday night, re-opening on Monday.

First came Saturday shopping, where shops could open on Saturday morning. A side effect of that was to kill late night shopping on Fridays in some provincial towns. It also took away some of the fun of going to New Brighton, which had shops open on Saturdays and closed on Mondays. Our classes were Monday-Friday so a group of us would often go there on Saturdays.

Saturday shopping soon extended to all day Saturday and Sunday. We’re still restricted on a few days a year. I for one am quite happy for garden centres to be opne on Good Friday. Having the autumnal break from work is a good time to prepare the garden for winter/spring. Christmas is a social event and my lack of options on that day are not a problem; I’m spending time with family and friends, and apart from batteries for my nephews toys, have no need to shop. (There’s usually enough batteries available for them anyway, I just have to make sure they are all half flat.)

A good number of my Sundays are now spent playing Dungeons and Dragons. Maybe that’s why I’m gay. Hmmm, none of they guys I game with are gay, though a flatmate of mine once thought a couple of them might be.

If the pope wants me in church on my knees then he needs to provide a good reason to do so.

It’s his right to say it, he is the ruler of a small country with agents in every other country, but it made to smile to read Pope says NZ far too secular today.
