He was a chef in the army, hence the quantity it makes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>35lb Apples, peeled, cored and sliced<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3\u00bclb Suet (chopped fine)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>8lb Bread crumbs or cake crumbs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>4lb Sugar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>18 Lemons, juiced and zested<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>2oz Cinnamon<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Butter for greasing the pans<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Method<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mix together the chopped suet, crumbs, lemon zest, sugar, cinnamon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Butter the pie dishes and fill with alternating layers of apple slices and the crumb mixture, with a sprinkle of lemon juice on each layer. Finish with a crumb mixture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover the top with apple peelings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bake for 1 hour in a <a href=\"http:\/\/shadowfoot.com\/recipe\/oven_temperatures\">moderate oven<\/a> then remove the peelings and cook until nicely browned.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This recipe comes from my father&#8217;s recipe book.
